A lot of you have asked about the sustainability of our products, our packaging, and about the safety of our working conditions. We thought we’d take a moment to talk about why print-on-demand is a distinct chapter in the sustainable fashion world and why you can feel confident about a partnership with us.
What is Sustainable Fashion?
Sustainable fashion, or slow fashion, is a concept that came about out of growing concern over excess consumption and waste in the fashion industry.
As opposed to “fast fashion,” which emphasizes the rapid mass production and distribution of the latest fashion at the cheapest price point, “slow fashion” emphasizes the production of higher-quality clothing sourced from sustainable materials and labor, often at a higher price point. Whereas fast fashion made to trash, slow fashion is made to last.
Green Strategy provides a comprehensive definition of sustainable fashion:
More sustainable fashion can be defined as clothing, shoes and accessories that are manufactured, marketed and used in the most sustainable manner possible, taking into account both environmental and socio-economic aspects. In practice, this implies continued work to improve all stages of the product’s life cycle, from design, raw material production, manufacturing, transport [etc.]… all stakeholders should work to improve present working conditions for workers on the field, in the factories, transportation chain, and stores, by aligning with good ethics, best practice and international codes of conduct.
So What’s Print-On-Demand Got to Do with It?
Actually, a lot. Print-on-demand means a product exists only when a customers orders it. With the right print-on-demand company, there’s no need to worry about inventory or minimum order quantity (MOQ). No inventory means no waste that results from warehouses of unsold goods.
While the POD model certainly minimizes waste, it’s hard to find POD companies committed to environmental sustainability in other ways. Luckily, we make a conscious effort to ensure all of our products and packaging are customized with care and crafted with integrity, for your ease of mind.
All of our products are handmade to order and crafted with the highest quality, ethically-sourced materials. Each item is hand-sewn or built one by one by our expert in-house seamstresses.
100 Standard OEKO-TEX®: the gold standard label for textiles tested for harmful substances. Each part of a garment–from materials to stitching, to applications and even zippers–has to meet strict criteria before approval. If your print-on-demand supplier has this certification, you know your products are in good hands.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): setting the bar high for forest management. The FSC certification “ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.”
SGS: from a European company setting global standards for inspection, testing, certification, and verification. We had to undergo a rigorous approval process to demonstrate that our products and production comply with national and international standards.
We strive to create a workplace environment that allows our employees to lead healthy, safe, and dignified lives. That’s why we work closely with Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) to carry out the most ethical and responsible practices in global supply chain. Among many other duties, SMETA auditors help us ensure that
- Our work environments are safe and sanitary.
- Our business practices are ethical.
